Samir Al Sayegh

Artist, poet, writer, art critic and historian, Samir Al Sayegh was born in Lebanon in 1945, where he continues to live and work. He studied art history at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, France and in 1993, became a lecturer at the Graphic Arts Department at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

As an artist Al Sayegh has devoted himself completely to the art of Arabic calligraphy. Considered as one of the most avant-garde Arab master calligraphers of his generation, Al Sayegh is dedicated to a stylized Arabic calligraphy, stressing the absolute aesthetic value inherent in calligraphy over literal meaning. His interest in traditional calligraphy as well as art and design led him to create new calligraphic typefaces and collaborations with numerous publications and fashion designers in Paris and Beirut.

Al Sayegh is a poet and author of several books on Sufi poetry and Islamic art and has written prolifically on contemporary Arab art and aesthetics.
