Laila Abu Al-Ola – Sudan
Born in Cairo, writer, novelist and playwright Leila Aboulela was raised in Khartoum where she enrolled in the Khartoum American School. The daughter of Sudan’s first-ever female demographer, she graduated from the University of Khartoum with a degree in economics and went on to earn a master’s degree in statistics from the London Institute of Economics. She lived for several years in Scotland where she wrote most of her award-winning works including the Caine Prize for African Writing for her novel The Museum.
