Dr. Sawsan Al-Abtah is a professor of Islamic civilization at the Lebanese University and St. Joseph University in Beirut who served as the cultural editor for Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper’s Beirut office since 1995. She earned her doctorate degree in Islamic Civilization from the Sorbonne and was a member of the Center for the Study of Celestial Religions of the National Center for Research and Sciences in Paris. She has written extensively on culture for a number of Arab newspapers and magazines.

From the idea of a house that opens its door to the cultures and sciences of the peoples, to the house whose owner used to write and gather what happens in the place and outside it … the house of Abdullah Al Zayed was the first to found journalism in Bahrain with a modern press and library. He was also the first to open a cinema. He was the only editor who worked passionately to publish the weekly Bahrain Newspaper, and even encouraged aspirants to write about literature and culture.
