A 1980s generation Egyptian poet, Darwish has 19 published books to his name, including 16 poetry collections, two novels and one on politics. Darwish serves as Director General of the General Authority for Cultural Palaces in the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and was a member of the editorial board of New Culture magazine between 2012 and 2016 in which he previously served as its editor. He also served as Executive Director of the General Union of Arab Writers for several years, and frequently participates in various lectures, symposia and international conferences. He also was the recipient of many poetic and literary awards.

When his soul left his body and this world, he left a house for poetry, a place for his things, and walls where the poetry he loved would remain. The Bahraini poet Ibrahim Al Arrayed, and all those who (followed) him in his literary journey and translated works, were retained by the Sheikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research in his city which he belonged, Manama. For it was the house of fame, as the first among the homes of cultural centers outside the city of Muharraq.
