Mohamed Sharkawy

Mohamed Sharkawy is a visual artist who works in multiple media including painting, sculpture and video. Born in 1982 in Naga Hamada in Egypt, Mohamed Sharkawy lives and works in Bahrain. He first came into contact with art through work at the renowned Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Egypt. Through his involvement in exhibition programming and outreach facilitation at Townhouse, Sharkawy was exposed to a variety of artists’ styles and approaches. It was here that he also found encouragement and inspiration through artist Huda Lufti and embarked on his own artistic journey in 2000.

Suitably, Mohamed Sharkawy first showcased his artistic work at the Townhouse Gallery – with two solo exhibitions “El Daba” and “El Kehrita” in 2006 and 2008 respectively. After his move to Bahrain in 2009, he exhibited in a number of group shows at Al Riwaq Art Space and the Financial Harbor Gallery, culminating in a solo exhibition at Al Riwaq Art Space in 2012 titled “Al Mahtah.” After his participation in the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York in 2013, Sharkawy presented new work at Al Riwaq Art Space under the title of “Memories Factory.”
