Shawqi Abdel-Ameer is an Iraqi poet and diplomat and has been the Director of the Arab World Institute since early March 2024. He was awarded the title of Knight in the Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture in 2023. Shawqi Abdel-Ameer has previously provided consultancy services to the Iraqi Council of Ministers, UNESCO for the Arab region, the Arab World Institute, and other institutions. He holds a master’s degree in Arabic literature from the Sorbonne University and won the Max Jacob Prize for Poetry in 2005. He has been the editor of several newspapers, established the “Book in a Newspaper” project, which is one of the most significant cultural projects in the Arab world, and has overseen many creative translations. Shawqi Abdel- Ameer has also published numerous poetry collections.
When his soul left his body and this world, he left a house for poetry, a place for his things, and walls where the poetry he loved would remain. The Bahraini poet Ibrahim Al Arrayed, and all those who (followed) him in his literary journey and translated works, were retained by the Sheikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research in his city which he belonged, Manama. For it was the house of fame, as the first among the homes of cultural centers outside the city of Muharraq.
