So that these hands wrap around the charm of the old houses that they create …so that the women can reach its gleaming threads from the memory of time, to thread her clothes. Because houses have secure doors, they know how to preserve the stories of that lived inside. For the house of Kurar is the last guardian of the traditional craft of kurar embroidery.

The women who have preserved this tradition gather and work to create the shining, delicate kurar ribbon, at Kurar House in old Muharraq.

With this intimate house, the Sheikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre is able to preserve this
handicraft and the elderly women who still practice it in order to encourage them to continue their art and train younger women who are interested. The Center also sells these beautiful handicrafts for the women’s benefit. The opening of the Kurar House in 2007 confirmed the ability of cultural structure to preserve intangible human heritage as well, providing a home for the continued work of reviving a craft on the edge of extinction.

The project flourishes with the support of Her Highness Sheikha Sabeeka bint Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al
Khalifa and the Kuwait Finance House. Kurar House hosts demonstrations on Sundays, Tuesdays and
Thursdays where visitors can admire the creativity and beauty of this form of embroidery.
