A Kuwaiti novelist and storyteller with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Kuwait University and a master’s degree in Creative Writing from Kingston University in London, Al-Rifai began writing while still in university in the mid-1970s and some of his works have been translated into English, French and German. Al-Rifai chaired the jury of the 3rd Arab Booker Prize in 2010 and is the founder and director of the Cultural Forum in Kuwait and the Forum’s prize for Arab short stories. Al-Rifai is a visiting professor of creative writing at the American University of Kuwait and vice-president of the Arab Awards Forum, and has won many Arab awards, in addition to authoring numerous published works of fiction and studies.
